If you’re new to sim racing you are likely going to need a set of pedals and a mounting option to go along with the first wheel and base purchase you make. We explored the Cammus C5 wheelbase and rim in the first article of the series, but Cammus also offer a wheel clamp and two pedal set as optional extras when checking out. we’ll delve into the features, performance, overall value and the target audience of these components in this article.
Wheelbase Mounting Options
The Cammus C5 Mounting Clamp offers versatile options for attaching your wheelbase securely to your racing rig or desk. The mounting bracket comes with adjustable clamps that accommodate a wide range of mounting surfaces. The C5 base mounts into the bracket using two arms that extend out of the back of the wheelbase. The interlocking method provides excellent stability to the direct drive unit, making it suitable for a desk mount or wheel deck mount on a designated sim rig. The mounting option is available for $29 from the Cammus website and represents great value to someone needing a versatile mounting option which allows for easy relocation or portability.
Pedal Set Review
The Cammus CP5 Two-Pedal Set which is available in a bundle discount with the C5 Wheelbase is Cammus’ entry level offering for a pedal set. The pedal set offers a simplistic design and is built to withstand the rigors of sim racing. The pedals themselves feature a potentiometer style pedal system. The potentiometer technology uses mechanical sensors for measuring how a brake has been pushed in. This measurement then translates how the pedal traveled into a braking force. But in actual cars, the way a pedal travels is not measured; instead, it measures the applied pressure. This is the most common style of pedal system for entry level racers and can also be found in similar entry level products from brands like Thrustmaster & Logitech.
When using the pedal set i found them to be reliable and on par with other pedals found in the entry level category. I found setting them up with the Desktop App easy when following the auto prompts. Making adjustments to the “Dead zone” helped give the pedals a sharper response out of the box but this was really about all the changes i needed to make.
Pedal Base Mounting Options
The Cammus CP5 Two-Pedal Set offers two forms of mounting. Out of the box you can apply the provided stick-on floor protectors to stop the metal base plate from sliding or choose to hard mount via the predrilled holes onto a sim rig pedal plate. The pedals themselves connect to the C5 base or PC via a USB-C cable.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Cammus C5 Two-Pedal Set and Mounting Clamp deliver a compelling combination of entry level performance, durability and affordability. The big appeal for me with any product in the C5 line so far has been the simplicity of setup and use of the products. Anyone who is venturing into sim racing for the first time or has limited knowledge of PC’s will find these products incredibly easy to use and keep you from spending all your time in driver updates, adjusting complex software or dialing in your in-game force feedback levels. This is also helped by the compatible sim racing titles picking up on the products and applying the correct custom profiles in game.
The simplicity of the pedals also means there is limited customisable options for the pedal set. It’s important to note that whilst the CP5 pedals are great for entry level sim racers, you will most likely be looking to move on from the potentiometer pedals if you are looking to expand into more competitive online racing.
As an entry level racing bundle, the Cammus C5 product line offers exceptional value to consumers. If you are in need of a mounting option and pedal set to get you sim racing journey underway, then it is hard to argue with the low cost of an extra $80 AUD at checkout to have these bundled in with the C5 base.
